Nutrition Biomarkers

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is activated by exposure to sunshine and is essential for bone health.

In addition to bone health vitamin D is also important for your immune system and low levels can affect both physical and mental health.  Symptoms include muscle weakness, low energy levels and mood swings. You might be more at risk of low vitamin D levels if you do not get enough sun exposure a problem for many people living in the UK.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is important for making red blood cells and the maintenance of the nervous system.

Vitamin B12 works alongside folate in the development of red blood cells and keeping the nervous system healthy. Low levels of B12 can cause anaemia symptoms include tiredness and muscle weakness and poor wound healing. If left untreated low B12 levels can cause memory and cognition problems which can lead to dementia.

Folate

Folate (vitamin B9) is not produced by the body and is supplied completely from our diet.

Folate is important for making DNA, red blood cells and repairing damaged tissues. Normal folate levels are important in early pregnancy and low folate can be a cause of anaemia.

Advanced iron studies

Iron is one of life's essential minerals and the main building block of red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body.

Our advanced iron studies measure biomarkers of the total amount of iron, how it is stored and transported in the body. Low iron levels can leave you feeling weak, tired, dizzy and short of breath.
